Born in the US in 1932 and raised in Quebec, Obomsawin is a legendary documentary filmmaker best known for focusing on First Nations issues. In 1985, she recorded her only album Bush Lady, a modern take on First Nations music that included both original folk songs and original compositions.

Bush Lady was initially recorded and released through the CBC in 1985, though Obomsawin found herself unsatisfied with the finished product. After reclaiming her masters, she remixed the material and rerecorded the title track with additional instrumentation, re-releasing the album herself through her own private press in 1988.
