Recorded at the historic Red Rocks amphitheater in the summer of 2015, "Live At Red Rocks" captures alt-J at the height of their powers, performing for 6,000 screaming fans.
features songs from their Mercury Prize winning and RIAA Gold certified debut, An Awesome Wave and the Grammy-Nominated follow up This Is All Yours
Alt-J has a way of finding that elusive groove the kind of beat that wraps its invisible fingers around audience members waists and gently pushes them into a slinky, sexy bounce, not unlike the first time you heard the xx. And that groove was front and center as the band started its set with Hunger of the Pine, an atmospheric and non-obvious opener. But as a simple a cappella intro later gave way to subtle percussion clips and then an artfully heavy synthesizer low-end, signaling the arrival of Fitzpleasure, the crowd dove right in with asses shaking and hands in the air.
This was why they were here. And this is why I first fell in love with this band. Seriously, Fitzpleasure was my Alt-J 101. Perhaps it should be yours, too?
So are they the next Radiohead?
In terms of music or trajectory?
In that theyre strange, but somehow they have this undeniable mass appeal.
So like Pink Floyd.
Yes, exactly. Theyll be headlining basketball arenas on their next record.
The bands Red Rocks show was intense, weighty and so very special.
is is one of the best bands making music right now, period. And from a tender, mid-set Matilda to a crushing, late-evening Tessellate and a funky, encore-closing Breezeblocks, Alt-J proved that it deserves to be on that big stage, on those radio waves and in our hearts."
