"Special thanks to Paul R. Dickinson Jr. for providing us with the original Trout Mask Replica cover photograph which we thought had been lost to time."

"2012 return by W.B. Note: The years in storage in Warners were not kind to Trout Mask Replica. The masters seriously suffer from oxide loss, primarily at the head of each of the four master reels. Fortunately, FZ had Dick Kunc make "safeties." These actually sound better than the Originals and are in excellent condition but alas, incomplete. This edition of Trout Mask Replica is from the ZFT Vault protection copies, transferred at 96K 24B, except for Frownland and Hair Pie: Bake 2 which are from the original damaged master tapes transferred to direct stream digital at UMRK.
DSD workstation provided by Gus Skinas, Super Audio Center.
Vaultmeisterment & Transfers by Joes Travers, UMRK, 2012."

R.I.P. Don Glen Vliet aka Don Van Vliet aka CAPTAIN BEEFHEART! He was humanly born of the WWII stoicism of 1941 (hey, Belushi made a movie by that title!) and grew on wings of music and giant legs of paint striding boldly into the 21st century (Schizoid Man!). Then on like a madman he charged as a cave-painting of a bull through the evanescent worlds of art, music and pop culture making rock-n-roll records.

Thankfully for us, The Dear Captain crafted music and art and poetry that was blessedly less how THEY told you it was and more about the POSSIBILITIES OF IT ALL.

Beefheart's guitars & paintbrushes were singular, otherly-thinking messages, his Magic Bands and their aesthetically musical output, that ever-expanding magnum opus,

TROUT MASK REPLICA: the masterpiece. passed from us this lighter-than-air-but-heavier-than-thought shaman who swirled his deft Mojo Sticks in the Mojave Desert's rocket sauce and blithely re-painted a dusky musical landscape with Hobo Chang Ba, Hair Pie Bake I & II, and Neon Meate Dream of a Octafish...and that was just to start! Captain Beefheart bent his unique sonic-vision of music upon the wills of utterly fantastic musicians who became in his sculptor's hands (perhaps unwillingly) scions of the rock-n-roll avant garde.

The dear Captain channeled from the depths of nature an impossibly ultra-human dialog and played it gloriously loud through dusty speakers to wincing listeners. One can only imagine those live shows: the Magic Band's twin guitars fought like light-sabres with wailing saxophones over oddly paced drums-n-bass then leavened and twisted by the grunted conjurings of a desert voodoo priest bent on painting the air with color-filled exhortations about fantastic, under-appreciated animals, quaint, ecological gardens and lot's of to-be-revered women.

It gets no more bizarre nor beautiful than Trout Mask Replica (ok, LICK MY DECALS OFF, BABY does so yet with a more rhythmic and lyrical finesse, and fewer caveman howls!). If you can't give TMR three listens and crave three-hundred-and-thirty-three more, then MOVE ON, THERE IS NOTHING TO HEAR HERE. But if you can patiently let this expression of pure id in, let it frighten/thrill/confuse you for all of it's 28 songs, you will have taken the sonic equivalent of a walk through a contemporary art museum, featuring a solo exhibition by the likes of Van Gogh, Picasso or Dali...AND SOMEHOW BE BETTER FOR IT.

But one needn't be an artist to appreciate this music (nor a musician, nor intellectual, nor misanthrope...tho, it may help). Don't mistake the finely honed and muscular musicianship for addled cacophony: wait for it. TMR is not out of tune, merely out of time and place. Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band have carved thoughtful, singing toy animals from joyful noise and earth just for you, little human. So get your blues on, open up to the universe and be taken to that place of lore and artful chance that will be fondly recalled for the rest of time
