This has Beethovenian depth and repose. It has s a lot more weight and allows that side to shine through. The sound, in spite of it having been recorded in 1962, is much better than most recent recordings. The violin is round and not etchy, and the piano, likewise, is full and warm. The playing is poetic and intimate - not virtuosic and individualistic. When you hear these sonatas, you don't hear Oistrakh or Oborin. You hear Beethoven and Beethoven alone
