Isakov, a Denver local, has been making waves for quite some time now. Originally born in South Africa, he grew up in Philadelphia before finding a home (at least for the present time, thankfully) in Denver. Upfront he has a definite folksy feel with hints of Bob Dylan and a touch of old-fashioned radio programmes
He has been influenced most by the music of Leonard Cohen, Kelly Joe Phelps and Bruce Springsteen.
Gregory has played at many music festivals held across the United States, Canada and Europ
. Even from the first track, “Dandelion Wine,” a story unfolds. The plot twists and turns through the tracks, with each song standing as it’s own tale. One of my favorites is “Evelyn,” the story of a girl, working the graveyard shift at a gas station, with dreams of the open road and achieving more in her life.
Musically, this album is astonishing. A mixture of classic instruments with a modern flare for style, This Empty Northern Hemisphere captures a certain aspect of Americana that can only be found in song. Through his use of 2 different microphones (a clean and a “tinny” sound), Isakov employs techniques that keep the songs from growing stale too quickly.
s played at many music festivals held across the United States, Canada and Europe. Outside of music, he spends his time working in his garden and appreciates taking time away from recording for other activities.
In 2016, Gregory released an album with The Colorado Symphony. The artist and group toured across the United States.
This Empty Northern Hemisphere is Isakov s latest collection of songs in which he conjures the miracles and heartaches of day to day living then transforms them into melodies, with a serious commitment to songcraft and musicianship. Isakov composed the songs for This Empty Northern Hemisphere following his relocation from the Colorado wilds to the town of Boulder. The period also marked the beginning of a new creative cycle for the 28-year-old singer songwriter, who combines his personal past with poetry to create a musically visceral present. Isakov co-produced the album at various locations with Jamie Mefford who also engineered and is credited with God Noises. He s accompanied throughout by his band, the Freight: Jen Gilleran (drums), Jeb Bows (violin) and Phil Parker (cello). Isakov plays guitars, banjo, piano and harmonica, among other instruments. Brandi Carlile (Columbia) sings on 5 of the tracks. The pair also cut Leonard Cohen s One of Us Cannot Be Wrong, as a duet.
