In the early 1990s the "MTV Unplugged" show was a complete success with bands like Nirvana, performances were bands would play their songs acousticly much to the delight of fans.KISS were certainly aware of the Unplugged shows as in 1995 they had their own unplugged show wich was released as "KISS MTV Unplugged" in 1996 both as an album and a concert movie. The band would play rarely performed live songs on the album such as "Coming Home" and "Plaster Caster".
Here KISS are not playing not their classic songs, but their rare songs. The ones they never play at concerts like "Sure Know Something","Going Blind" and "Do You Love Me?".The songs sound great in their acoustic form and here they are played the way they were written,on acoustic guitars. The only song that is not a rarity on here is the well overplayed "Rock`N`Roll All Nite",wich still sounds really good.
This show is basicaly KISS just playing their song in an acoustic version with no explosion, makeup or pyrotechnics at all, just guys with guitars playing songs,at simplest as it gets. Its definatly a KISS show at its greatest but the music is really good and fans thanks to the release of this album know what KISS sounds like unplugged.
Its no secret that an unplugged show for a famous band is a great recipe for succes. It worked for Nirvana,KISS and many others and fans will always pay for it.To the many bands out there who have yet to release an acoustic album:why not?Fans will be happy about it and its garenteed succes, that is if you can play the songs correctly!
Its safe to say that had the "MTV Unplugged" concert never happened, the 1996 reunion of the original members with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss wouldn`t have seen the day.Ace and Peter play with Gene and Paul on "2000 Man" the Rolling Stones cover on "Dynasty" in 1979 and "Beth",Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer joins them on "Nothin`To Loose" and "Rock`N`Roll All Nite".Those are good performances of the songs.
"MTV Unplugged" is an absolute gem for the KISS fan, this is the only acoustic concert KISS ever done, besides those at some of the KISS Expos. Also it features rarely played songs wich is another reason to get this album. If you like it you might want to check out the DVD of this concert, its great also.A great acoustic album for KISS,a gem!5 stars.
