" Kurt Elling begins his new and perhaps finest album, The Questions, with Bob Dylan's Walt Whitmanesque "A Hard Rain's A-gonna Fall." It sets the stage to a series of equally thoughtful songs from the pens of Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, Jaco Pastorius, Leonard Bernstein, Carla Bley, Rodgers and Hammerstein II, Johnny Mercer, Elling himself, and two keyboardists on this album, Stu Mindeman and Joey Calderazzo. Other musicians participating in this project are saxophonist Branford Marsalis, drummer Jeff "Tain"Watts, bassist Clark Sommers, and guitarist John McLean. A Happy Thought oddly deals with death, but from the perspective of a older, wiser veteran of life. Other songs seek resolution from remorse from romantic decisions. The arrangement of Lonely Town is especially arresting with its upbeat drumming and piano with Elling's half-speed vocal poetry. Indeed, other lyrics incorporate the poems of Sara Teasedale, Wallace Stevens, and Rumi. The wonderful phrasing and emphasis of Elling bring a variety of mood and flow despite the consistent moderate tempo. The instrumental arrangements are well-crafted to add complementary flavor, as a Latin beat in The Enchantress. The inward journey closes with Skylark. Elling, a leading vocalist who has 10 Grammy nominations [one win] and a large discography of his own albums and guest appearances, has given us an entirely different album, one of quiet reflection where answers to The Questions do not come as words."
