Leon's sound is reminiscent of a time when music was much more tangible and respected than these days. There's an innate sensuality that comes with the passion one must possess to be able to create such soulful sounds with an air of effortlessness as Leon does. As if by some fashion he is all too cool for anything other than complete perfection. And he is, of course.

Leon Bridges is 25 and grew up listening to Usher and Ginuwine, but you wouldn't know it listening to his debut "Coming Home" which sounds like it was recorded in the fifties or sixties. His simple organic soul/blues/gospel sound recalls Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke with references to New Orleans and The Mississippi.

Concise at 10 tracks, his smoky world weary vocals shine on every track, from the bluesy title track, the Doo-wop-laced "Better Man" which finds him declaring that he loves her "Better than all those Jezebels lurking under perfumed sheets", while "Brown Skin Girl" is a horn-peppered slowly swinging piece.

Upping the tempo are the bouncy "Smooth Sailin'" and "Flowers", while "Shine" is an organ-driven blues/hymnal ballad. Highlight has got to be the autobiographical "Lisa Sawyer", an ode to his mother set to a strolling pace and soothing harmonies (of "Pa pa doos"). Closing is the acoustic tambourine-garnished gospel-tinged ballad "River" with a lovely bridge which finds him harmonising with some haunting female vocals.

Produced by Austin Jenkins and Joshua Block of indie rock band White Denim, the album was recorded on vintage analogue equipment virtually live. Right from the retro cover art to the throwback sound, this sounds like a lost classic rediscovered. Leon Bridges is the real deal.
