The latest band to release a live album on Jack White's Third Man Records are the Melvins, and fans can get a taste of that concert LP by checking out the version of "It's Shoved," originally from 1991's Bullhead.
This track, which kicks of the record's B-side, is two and a half minutes of sludgy riffs, pounding drums, maniacally hollered vocals and pure adrenaline.
Recorded Direct-To-Acetate by the double-drummer quartet on May 30th, 2013 in our Blue Room, this show shook pictures off the walls of Third Man headquarters and had the crowd begging for two things: a pair of earplugs, and for the night to never end.
May 30th, 2013 brought sludge masters The Melvins to the Blue Room. Upon entering the space it was impossible not to notice the vast amount of stage taken up by two drum sets, side-by-side, played with muscular thunder by Coady Willis of Big Business and Dale Crover. Yeah, no big deal there: just the drummer on half of Nirvanas Bleach from 1989!
After a short warm-up the recording proper began with a 20 minute version of Charmicarmicat from 1991s Eggnog EP, a grinding dirge of off-kilter time signatures, feedback, and one bass riff lasting almost 20 minutes and taking up the entirety of Side A of the recording. For me, the sheer volume of sound and gut-vibrating low-end harkened back to NY No-Wave torchbearers Swans, a distinction I have never really considered as a relative to grunge.
