Michael displays the seemingly limitless range of his vocal talent through songs like 'Butterflies' and 'Speechless' where he elevates his voice with remarkable control, sensitivity and warmth. The best song on the album and arguably his best song ever is 'Whatever Happens'. Lyrically touching, Michael passionately narrates the tale of two troubled lovers over the musical backdrop of Carlos Santana. The song is brilliant for its romantic grittiness and instrumental and vocal elegance.
An interesting element to the album is that despite Michael's self-proclamation as the 'King of Pop', the album isn't at all pop-like. With the exception of 'You Rock My World', which is a wonderful toe-tapping piece but obviously made for commercial consumption, a number of the songs will have greater chances being played on R&B stations than on the Top 40.
Despite these flaws, the album overall is a demonstration of Michael's unquestionable raw vocal talent which is unmatched by any contemporary singer male or female. And to a certain degree, the album is an expression of Michael's resistance to a media, which seems bent on dragging him down by obsessing over his eccentricities and personal misfortunes. Because in spite of it all, after you hear this album, no matter what the song, you can't help but say to yourself, 'Damn, this guy can sing!"
