Much as Light Up Gold & the subsequent EP Tally All The Things That You Broke offered a uniquely tattered perspective on everyday life, Sunbathing Animal applies the same layered thoughts and sprawling noise to more cerebral, inward-looking themes. While heightened in its heaviness and mania, the album also represents a huge leap forward in terms of songwriting and vision.

Another MAGNIFICENT album by Parquet Courts. I see a few magazine reviewers still like to point out a lack of originality in their music, and although the Pavement, Televison and Wire influences are discernible, it's more appropriate to criticize a lack of originality with the music journalists. Every band(bad, good or great) comes with an influence, and it's pointless to criticize the ones who transform their influences into their own, fresh
and distinct sound, like Parquet Courts have done. The bands they are frequently compared to should only stand as reference points.

"Sunbathing Animals" offers a few lengthier, more repetitive songs than the short blasts on "Light Up Gold", like the extended jams of "She's rolling" and "Instant disassembly". The latter holds a beautiful, infectious guitar line and is one of the shiniest songs on the album. "Sunbathing Animals" is also a more nuanced album, balancing between rock n roll bruisers and slower songs, but it's not like they have taken a new direction, I would rather call it a slight
adjustment of sound and attitude.

Other great songs include the frenzied attack of the title track, with Savage singing from the perspective of his cat, the hypnotic groove of "What Color Is Blood", "Bodies made Of", "Raw Milk" and the feverishly cool & kicking "Ducking and dodging".
