...Like Clockwork is the first Queens Of The Stone Age album since 2007's Era Vulgaris and, according to its founder constant, Joshua Homme, "...like clockwork was the only thing that didn't happen. " After a "manic year, " Homme and the current version of the Queens -- veteran Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman and Dean Fertita--along with the outgoing Joey Castillo and returning associate Dave Grohl, decided to embrace The Beast, "ride shotgun on our emotional bandwagon... hold the horrible, lick the lunacy" and, instead of shying away from uncomfortable or painful subject matter -- face it head-on.

Along with Grohl, they picked up known associates Mark Lanegan, Nick Oliveri , Jon Theodore (now drumming full-time in the current live incarnation), Sir Elton John, Trent Reznor, Alex Turner and Jake Shears.

Whatever happened -- out there, in whatever desert arroyo, former meth lab, decommissioned missile silo, nuclear test site, underground laboratory, convergence of brain waves and gamma rays, QOTSA emerges with not only their best work to date, but one of the most ambitious, fully realized classic rock albums in recent memory.

The sixth studio album from Queens of the Stone Age is a rock album that is definitely a defining moment for all participating members. It is the most revealing, most focused album for the veteran rockers and it is definitely their most ambitious effort yet.

Keep Your Eyes Peeled - A perfect opener that puts everything out on the table atmospherically for the album. Filled with their trademark falsettos (also an appearance by Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters) and awkward guitar riffs, a very raw and heavy track that just takes you for a ride from start to finish. Intense harmonies and pauses make this a dynamical treat. It sets the precedent for the whole album. 10/10

I Sat By The Ocean - Goes right into a nice groove with an elegant lead before getting straight to the vocal. Lyrics match perfectly with the overall feel of the music. More polished than what you would hear on their previous works but necessary in this instance. This is classic Queens right here and will please any longtime fan such as myself. My only criticism is that the chorus could have been more dynamic but nonetheless a good track. 8/10

The Vampyre Of Time And Memory - A slower track that rides on the piano and leans on smooth breathy vocals. The build up to the harmonies is beautifully written and is definitely emotionally heavier than what you would ever expect from these guys. 9/10

If I had A Tail - The albums pop song but still containing the dark undertones from before. The keyboard effects and the guitar being in sync with each other just adds this unique feeling that makes this a standout track. Mark Lannegan makes a subtle appearance which is always a pleasure on a Queens track. 8/10

My God Is The Sun - A defining track that just straight up kicks you in the teeth. A high dynamic in-your-face track with that signature "desert rock" feel. All the nooks and crannies of this track will be ear candy through and through and will leave you wanting more. 10/10

Kalopsia - What we have here is one of this albums masterpieces. The verse shimmers with beautiful peaceful soundwaves of emotion before jolting you to reality with a fiery chorus that fits perfectly like the last piece of a puzzle. One of the best rock songs in recent years in which will age like fine wine. A personal favorite of mine that I will return to often. 10/10

Fairweather Friends - Musically intricate and colorful, sounds like something you'd hear from a new Them Crooked Vultures record (Josh Homme's recent project with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones). An all-star track featuring Dave Grohl, Nick Oliveri, Mark Lannegan and Elton John. You are taken through a nice wide variety of ups and downs that ultimately satisfy. I wish they would have turned up the vocal for Lannegan and Elton though. 9/10

Smooth Sailing - For me this is their weakest track for this record but still really good which just goes to show how on point they are this time around. A semi-weak verse with a great chorus to balance it out, it keeps my attention but doesn't emit the same amount of energy like the other tracks have done for me. 7/10

I Appear Missing - Ladies and gentleman, hands down the best they've ever done and quite possibly one of the best rock songs in years. Every note is exactly where it should be and you will be reassured by my statement upon multiple listens. Each section conveys into each other with grace and harmony. I never expected a track like this from these guys but here it is and now it's instantly one of my favorite songs and an instant classic might I add. Perfect vocals, perfect song structure and just a great all around feeling throughout the 6 minutes this song plays within your presence. 10/10

Like Clockwork - An emotional closer to this magnificent piece of art. I personally think this QOTSA at their most vulnerable. Reminds me of something Pink Floyd would do or say when Josh sings "Not everything that goes around comes back around". Powerful words that provoke thoughts of your past, present and future. During this track I realized a whole new respect for these musicians. 9/10

This album is in a league of its own. Beautiful, dark, haunting and memorable. As a musician this album has inspired me and has pushed me to writing music again. While some will read my review as an overreaction, many will read my review as a dead-on response to the brilliance of this record. Having seen 9/10 of this record performed live at The Wiltern here in Los Angeles, I can say that the songs here translate just as well if not better live so I would like to suggest catching this band in concert where ever you live in the world. Now go on, buy the record...experience it.
