It begins with an instrument called a nykelharpa, a Swedish cross between an autoharp and a violin - it's a bowed string instrument that is played with keys. Here, it sounds mournful and Celtic, and grabs your attention immediately. The song is "I Asked", which is beautiful, pulsating, disturbing, and sensual all at the same time, with amazingly nuanced vocals from Becca Stevens. From there, a rhythmic Peruvian song with the indescribable Charlie Hunter on 7 string guitar, where the lowest 2 strings are bass strings which he plays while soloing.

The middle of the album features jazzy, R&B and/or African-tinged songs, all with amazing vocals. Don't You Know continues the emotionally captivating and slightly unnerving tone of the album with Manhattan Transfer-esqe vocals and harmonies, a driving beat, and piano solos that could be from Brad Mehldau.

I Remember is a sort of acid-jazz/swing/R&B mashup, with a fast pace and great fast swing vocals. But the album ends with Somebody Home, featuring David Crosby on acousitc guitar and vocals. A mellow change of pace to the rest of the album, and as sublimely beautiful a song as you could ever hope to hear, featuring some amazing Hammond organ textures.

Other highlights 2 trks frpm vocalist Chris Turner’s sultry rendition of his R&B original, “Liquid Love,” and Brother, I'm Hungry

also “Molino Molero,” a heavily syncopated Afro-Peruvian piece by the legendary Susana Baca

All this, along with the fantastic chops and arranging skills of the Snarky Puppy band. Booming basses, trippy electronics, jamming percussions, and wonderful horn and keyboard work. Not a bad moment on this, a captivating listen, and very well done.
