"Spruce Trap is a Vancouver-based post rock band formed in 2012 by guitarist Isaac Jeffs and drummer Kai Furugori. True to their west coast roots the pair would twice-weekly hike their city’s celebrated north shore trails, before returning home to experiment with ambient music inspired by their adventures, and quickly they recruited Eric Furugori on bass and second guitar to expand their tonal options. With the adoption of their nature-inspired moniker, Spruce Trap released their first EP in 2014 and played heavily around their hometown, performing with the likes of Jung People, and Eternal Tapestry at the Vancouver Psych Fest in 2015. Now some 12 months since it’s completion, the trio are preparing to release their debut LP and long form lead single, Fiddle Nero/Rome Is Burning, is exemplary of what listeners can expect from the album. Despite clocking in at 42 minutes the LP, titled The Wise Prefer To Perish, features only four tracks and sets a dark mood that matches its evocative title, which takes cue from the irreversible damage we have caused to our planet".
"There are classically anthemic influences to cite here, from aggressively cinematic high-gain thunder in the vein of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Mogwai, to the more emotive, heartstring-stretching legato, insistent build over simple phrasing, and delay-heavy sonics of Explosions in the Sky.
Opening track “Tumült” is a classic example of these influences, a weighty ten-minute exploration of patient rhythm guitar stalking and galloping drum triplets, layered over with lead guitarist Isaac Jeffs’ washes of gain. The track never razes the intricate setting built by its component parts, instead seeming to shade the scene in deeper and more intricately with each passage.
“Fiddle Nero / Rome Is Burning” commits to a more metallic style, using folded and refolded delay feedback as a growling subtext for a tableau of glittering, dark neo-prog flourishes and ghostly treble wails. The song ratchets up into a teeth-rattling central section, but its languid outro – suggesting that it was all a dream, somehow – really sticks the landing." (
