(DecadeMag) "Anton Newcombe is from Newport Beach, California. Anton Newcombe has a fucking Fred Perry tattoo on his chest, emblazoned like a badge of fashionist glory. He is also the mastermind behind The Brian Jonestown Massacre, a legendary group who appear to take psychedelia’s height at the outro of The Stones’ ‘Gimme Shelter’ to an altogether re-imagined plateau.

Be it ‘Within You/Without You’-ish and Beatles-esque over their own intro here (‘All Around You’) or lazy and so, like, totally out there, man, on ‘Donovan Said’, BJM effortlessly wind through Haight-Ashbury tropes with flair. Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request is an acid trip through and through, alluring in its soundscapes and authentic in its departure from both pretentious nothings and the pseudo truths of lysergic self-proclaimed seers.

“I don't care what people think... if they think it's derivative or invoking a certain time period or what have you. I'm just doing it because it's the music I like. It doesn't exist unless I animate it,” said Newcombe around the time of Take It From The Man. His statement resonates in TSMSR too; not just because both records were released in 1996, but because BJM never once feel like they are ‘ripping off’ or being deliberately homogenous. This is the music that Mr. Newcombe likes and this is the music that Mr. Newcombe plays.

Tracks like ‘Jesus’ and ‘Miss June ‘75’ may be sluggish, but they are so with an inviting aura. The mountains of the TSMSR album cover (courtesy of a famous National Geographic photoset) are mighty appropriate; dominate, pure and clean, representing thousands of journeys and yet remaining wholly unmoved. And then of course, there’s ‘Anemone’"
