Steely power-pop, delivered at high velocity.

The Clash's second album in the U.K. and first album in the U.S., and their only album with Blue Oyster Cult producer Sandy Perlman, Give 'Em Enough Rope is 10 tracks of rip-roaring rock'n'roll. The tracks are characteristically loud, hard, and fast, but Joe Strummer and Mick Jones still manage to make their audience think. Pouding, pulsing guitar, machine-gun-like drumming, thumping bass, and furious, raging singing form the basic formula for this album, a statement from the punk world in the late seventies. While being the perfect songs to head-bang to, or simply get pent-up emotions out to, they also inform. "Safe European Home," a truly amazing song which kickstarts the album, describes the Jamaica Joe and Mick visited while writing the songs for this piece of music. "English Civil War," a wonderfully arranged version of the traditional song "Johnny Comes Marching Home," presents an Orwellian look at modern England and the future, which, not surprisingly, looks bleak. "Tommy Gun" comments on terrorism, proving this particular topic isn't new, no matter how new George Bush tries to make it. Two of my favorites (aside from the opening track) include "Drug-Stabbing Time" and "Stay Free," the latter being "the most heterosexual love song between two men." It's written by Mick Jones about his life-long friend Robin Banks, the man who originally taught him to play guitar. Informative and exciting, this album tops my charts, and is a must-have for any punk fan's collection, as well as anyone remotely interested in rock'n'roll.
