The Young Canadians blazed onto to the Vancouver scene in early 1979 and were soon heralded as one of that wonderfully creative, mostly undiscovered punk/new wave scene's best bands, alongside the Subhumans, Pointed sticks and D.O.A. When they started they were known as The K-Tels, but after the giant corporation threatened them with a huge lawsuit, they became known as Young Canadians. Led by the then unknown, but soon to become legendary guitarist/singer Art Bergmann and helped along by the incredibly adept rhythm section of drummer Barry Taylor and bassist Jim Bescott, the Young Canadians soon carved out a stong following up and down the west coast of North America and across Canada, with their unique rock/pop/punk sound. From their first EP, the song "Hawaii" with it's memorable line "Let's go to fuckin' Hawaii" became an underground hit.

The band's leader and songwriter was Art Bergmann, who went on to become one of the key figures in Canadian alternative rock in the 1980s and 1990s. A pioneer of Vancouver's punk scene, songwriter/guitarist Bergmann has always walked on the edge and a volatile personality and drug addiction has kept him from reaping the benefits of his on-again off-again solo career.

Bergmann and others led the Vancouver punk scene into a revolution that Bergmann would soon sign-post with a number of other legendary acts. In 1978 he joined the K-Tels who would release two EPs - 'Hawaii' (1979) and 'This Is Your Life' (1980) before a well known record label threatened copyright infringement action against them and so they became the X-Tels and finally The Young Canadians
